Don Pancho's Spirit Night a Success!

September, 2015

On Wednesday, September 9, 2015, the PTO sponsored the 1st Annual SA Spirit Night at Don Pancho's Cantina in Franklin and what a SUCCESS it turned out to be!! The event, which began at 5pm, had families start the evening off with a BANG arriving early for dinner. Their early arrival prompted a constant flow of SA friends and families throughout the evening especially between 6:00 and 7:30pm.

Another fun part of the evening was the raffles the PTO offered. The first was a $25 gift certificate to Don Pancho's, donated by Frank Padilla of Don Pancho's. The gift certificate was won by Miss Madison Taylor. The second raffle was a pair of football passes graciously donated by Athletics and they were won by the Munford family. Lastly, an SA Spirit basket was raffled off, which was donated by our SA Spirit Shop, and was won by Miss Brooklynn Drake. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will go towards the PTO's future events for our SA family.

Thank you to all who attended, for your patience and support. We look forward to our next SA PTO Spirit Night at Dairy Queen in Courtland, on Tuesday, October 20, 2015!

Agriscience Class Participates in Virginia Tech Tidewater Station Crops Tour

Students in the agriscience class at Southampton Academy recently participated in a crops tour at Virginia Tech’s Tidewater Agricultural Research & Extension Center farm. The field trip was very timely for the class as they are currently studying soil chemistry and fertility as a component of their overall agriscience curriculum. On the field trip students toured research plots along with commercial growers, Extension Agents and crop consultants from around the region. Virginia Tech faculty presented information from their 2015 research trials on potassium nutrition of soybean, soil and foliar nutrient applications for cotton, fertility for wheat-soybean double crop systems, and development of new varieties of peanut and grain sorghum. Students were also able to visit with representatives of agribusiness companies and view displays of the agricultural equipment and services these companies provide to the agriculture industry. The program concluded with a full course lunch which the students enjoyed along with all other participants of the crops tour.

The agriscience course at Southampton Academy represents a new science offering that focuses on scientific principles as they apply to food and fiber production and natural resource management. The course compliments a strong existing science curriculum that includes physical science, biology, environmental science, chemistry and physics offerings from grades 9 through 12.
